Junior Scientist Solar Tempo (Study Project)
Solar Tempo are powered by energy from the sun. Although they are not a practical or economic form of transportation at present, in the future they may play a part in reducing our reliance on burning fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel. The main cost is due to the large number of expensive and delicate photovoltaic solar panels that are needed to power the vehicle. A solar powered vehicle can only run efficiently when the sun shines, although most vehicles of this type have a battery backup. Electricity is stored in the batteries when the sun is shining and this power can be used when sun light is restricted (cloudy). Solar Tempo is designed and developed, solar based auxiliary power systems for the transportation industry to reduce fuel cost, reduce engine maintenance cost, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Applications have been developed for medium and heavy duty trucks, commercial buses, school buses and military vehicles. These systems not only generate power from a proprietary solar system, but can take shore power, and power from the engine alternator if needed. This power is then stored in the on board battery system and distributed to various truck/trailer functions when required.
